First and foremost, I would like to explain that what I believe and seek to share here is a universal, mystical spirituality. The language that I often use, however, is primarily a combination of self-realization concepts, and Christian ones, because those are the two paths with which I am most familiar. So, please allow me to share a few thoughts that became clear to me on Christmas day, because we may all benefit from these words, even though they originate with the story of Jesus’ life and the concept of “Christ.”
On Christmas day, 2013, it occurred to me that the concept of “born from above” could be understood in what is for me a totally new way. There is a Biblical text in which Jesus states (John, chapter 3) “you must be born from above.” The Greek word translated “above” can also be translated “again” and so it is often translated that way, and traditionally, Protestant Christians have understood this to mean “accepting Christ as your Savior and receiving the Holy Spirit.” Being born again is an event, although it leads to changed personhood as well as changed behavior (ideally, anyway).
For several years, I have believed that Jesus meant “born from above,” in the sense of living from our true selves, our souls, the divine presence within us, our Higher Selves, or whatever equivalent term you might use here. This concept is, I believe, vital on our spiritual paths. In other words, being born from above means, in its essence, that instead of living from our ego selves, we live from our Higher Selves.
This past Christmas, however, a new way of understanding this became clear to me. Perhaps you are aware that, as we develop on the spiritual path, we progressively energize our chakras, raising the spiritual energy up the spine. Eventually and ultimately, we open our crown chakras (on top of our heads). The crown chakra connects us essentially directly with the Divine, through our Higher Selves (Bindu, or 8th chakra, as I understand it). Consciousness from higher realms, higher beings, and Godde him/herself can flow through a fully open and fully energized crown chakra.
This is, I believe, the fullest development of the meaning of the phrase “born from above”: that we have opened and blossomed the thousand-petaled lotus of the crown chakra, resulting in our living from this higher plane of consciousness.
Living life this way is so lovely. The higher view of the crown chakra helps with every situation in life, it helps with relationships, it helps us grow beyond our ego limits. So, to be born from above, we need to practice spiritual disciplines like Raja Yoga meditation and Kriya yoga meditation which will raise our energies up our spines and unfold the flowering lotus of our crown chakra.
Now, we can live from our Higher Selves rather than from our egos without having fully opened the crown chakra, but having one’s crown chakra open leads to a qualitative difference which I believe has to do with the combination of very pure intentions and very sincere devotion. Of course, the crown chakra will only fully open as the thousand-petaled lotus if we have very pure intentions and a sense of devotion.
In Self-Realization terms, this living from above is Self-Realization. Of course, Jesus is one of the Ascended Masters, those who have attained Self-Realization, like Buddha, High Priest Melchizedek, Mother Mary, Lady Kwan Yin, Paramahansa Yogananda, and others. We can get there also – it usually takes awhile, but we can get there, and I hope this blog will help you do so.
May you be blessed with peace, love, and bliss,
